Considering a new metal roof for your home?

Residential metal roofs are available in a wide variety of colors and styles. Some of the most common styles include Standing Seam, Stone Coated Steel, Corrugated Steel with Exposed Fasteners, and Steel Shingles.

A new metal roof can easily last beyond 50 years or more with very little maintenance. They are very durable and can withstand the harsh weather conditions we see in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Extreme temperatures, high winds and moderate hail are no match for the protection a metal roof can provide your home.

So why aren’t all roofs constructed with metal? Good question and there is an easy answer: Cost

Metal roofs have a significantly higher material cost and the labor required for installation is a very specialized skill set. Subsequently the roof systems longevity does help to offset the initial cost over time.

The Pros and Cons of metal roofing systems:

Metal Roof Pros:

  • Durability is often the first thought for most people.  A metal roof can provide a service life of fifty years and beyond in some cases.  Compare that to an asphalt shingle roof system in North Texas typically serving only fifteen to twenty years before it needs serious attention.
  • Metal roofs are environmentally friendly.  Traditional asphalt shingles consume a lot of fossil fuels during the manufacturing process.  The shorter life span of asphalt shingles means they will end up in a land fill much sooner when replaced and recycling uses are minimal.   Most metal roofing products contain a significant percent of recycled material in their manufacturing and all of the metal is recyclable when replaced.
  • Metal roofs are energy efficient.   Metal roofing reflects solar radiant heat, instead of largely absorbing it like most asphalt shingle products do.  Some metal roofing products also have a special reflective pigment that enhances the reflectivity of solar radiant heat even more.
  • Todays metal roofing systems are great looking and add a flare of style that can only be achieved with a metal roofing system.  With the ability to pick from a wide ranging color pallete and numerous styles, the perfect metal roof that will handsomely complement your home is sure to be found.

Metal Roof Cons:

  • They can be expensive (but oh so beautiful, we know!).  Compared to a traditional laminate asphalt shingle roofing system, metal roofs vary from being three to five times more in cost.
  • Metal roofs are not bullet proof.  They can be dented which can lead to some issues.  In Dallas Fort Worth this risk is primarily from hail storms and any potential tree limbs that could fall onto the roof.  Also, some metal roof systems really can’t be walked on, so be sure you confirm things like this when making a selection for your metal roof system.
  • Many insurance companies now require a “cosmetic damage waiver” if your home has a metal roof.  This is tricky topic.  Most insurance companies will provide a significant discount on your overall annual homeowners insurance premium for having a Class 4 rated metal roof.  The downside is that if you sustain hail damage on your metal roof and it only causes dings that are ugly, the insurance company can deny a claim citing the cosmetic damage waiver.

At Harvey Roofing & Construction we love metal roofing systems.  The longevity and style they offer are spectacular.

Designing Your New Metal Roofing System

There are dozens of components involved in any metal roofing system.  It is very important that your new metal roofing system for your home is designed and installed by highly knowledgably experts, even more important than the particular style or brand of material used.  Like any roof installation, quality products can’t overcome poor workmanship.  The worse nightmare would be to have a new metal roof that leaks or won’t stand the test of time.  Unfortunately we repair metal roofs installed by others all the time for that exact reason.

Considerations in the design:

  • Status of Existing Roof and Substrate
  • Type of New Metal Roof System
  • Style Selections within New System Family
  • Color Selections
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Attic Venting Style, if applicable
  • Components for all Roof Features
  • Installation Particulars
  • Material Warranty Desired

If a new metal roofing system is right for your home we are excited to meet with you to discuss the specifics further.  Harvey Roofing & Construction and our team of metal roofing experts pay extreme attention to detail and take great pride in our metal roofing installation projects.  We serve the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex from our home office in Joshua, TX.  We would love to talk metal roofing with you!

Harvey came out and inspected the roof. The roof was in bad shape and he was able to get the whole thing replaced. There was some duct work that needed to be done and he just took care of it for us. Great guy.

Harvey Roofing not only repaired my roof where it joined my patio cover, but they also replaced and extended the metal cover. Harvey and his crew were professionals—they arrived on time, worked diligently throughout the day, left the workspace spotless, and texted to let me know they had completed the work for the day and telling me when they would return. The finished work is evidence that they are perfectionist who take a great deal of pride in their work. I highly recommend Harvey Roofing and Construction.

Attention to detail, professionalism and responsiveness are all reasons Harvey Roofing & Construction deserves such a good rating. After being bombarded by all the storm chasing roofers, I decided to get an inspection from someone certified by the roofing material companies I was most interested in, Malarkey and Atlas. Harvey is certified by both. After much discussion, in which Harvey was very informative, I decided to go with the Atlas StormMaster Shake with Scotchgard shingles, a Class 4 high wind and impact resistant product that will also repel algae. Also upgraded to 6" gutters and Lomanco 14" turbines. In all of our conversations, Harvey was very knowledgeable about the products he uses and the trends in the roofing industry. If you don't want to be wondering if you chose the right roofer and roofing products, call Harvey Roofing & Construction and be sure!
